Caroline Lumsden

‘A holistic approach to music making from cradle to rocking chair’

String Starters-1Passionate about the social side of music, Caroline believes that every child, whatever their background, should be given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and partake in group playing and singing giving them a head start in life.

She trained as a violinist and singer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then as a primary school teacher.

After working as a class teacher in London, she moved to Gloucestershire. Here she founded the Beauchamp Music Group, the Gloucester Academy of Music and Performing Arts and, with husband Alan, GAM Holiday Music and Drama Courses as well as the Musicland Publishing Company.

Her Musicland characters and rhythm training are used worldwide to help the very young learn to read music subconsciously. The method was developed at the Gloucester academy and adopted by StringTime at Junior Trinity. She has a large catalogue of music teaching books published by Musicland, Edition Peters and Fabers.

More recently, Caroline taught ‘Language through Music’ to primary school pupils in France during the week, returning to London every weekend to teach for the ‘Young String Project’ at Junior Guildhall, followed by becoming the first Director of String Time at Junior Trinity in London.

Constantly seeking new ways to inspire the young, Caroline currently divides her time between teaching and training. She loves nothing more than nurturing new talent , whether pupils or teachers and helping to get new projects off the ground.

Now , back in the UK and celebrating Musicland’s 30 years of nourishing young musicians, she is launching new centres around the country with her Musicland partner, Camilla Tress.
