Musicland Approach

Musicland

The Musicland Approach, established in 1984, is an all round musical training that takes a child from early singing and rhythm games through aural, theoretical and technical games leading to a highly trained technical and creative musician able to participate in music making at any level.

There are music teachers, composers and performers all over the world trained by this system.

The central philosophy of the Musicland Approach is that children learn about rhythm, singing and movement most effectively through imaginative play, adventure, action songs and dance.

But the key difference between the Musicland Approach and other teaching methods, is that children learn to read and write music from a very young age through the ‘note’ characters, who have adventures in a magical, musical world.

In fact, many children will learn to read music before they are able to read books. This gives them a head start when learning an instrument. Most children trained with the Musicland Method will start an instrument at age 5 having already had two years of singing and rhythm training.

The Approach

The Musicland approach to education teaches the language of music – reading notes and rhythm and understanding pitch – through the development of seven skills:

‘Listen, move, clap and sing, read, write and play’

Through the musical alphabet of A B C D E F G pupils develop:

  • Aural skills through listening and responding
  • A sense of Beat through movement
  • Rhythm recognition through Clapping games
  • An understanding of musical Dynamics through singing and signing
  • The ability to Express themselves through reading and writing music
  • A sense of Fun through creating and performing their own rhymes and tunes
  • A Good Grounding in sound instrumental and performance techniques

Through carefully designed Musicland techniques pupils acquire:

  • a strong understanding of rhythm from Musicland Time Name
  • a secure sense of pitch through Musicland Note Names and Curwen Hand Signs
  • an ability to read and create music with the Musicland Characters
  • a sound theoretical and instrumental technique through Musicland Training
